These lemon-yellow summer squash will grace the garden early and often, producing a steady supply of flowers and fruit with little fuss.
Choose a sunny location and loosen soil, adding plenty of compost or well-rotted manure to form low mounds spaced 4 feet apart. After your last frost, when soil temperature is above 60°F, sow 4 to 6 seeds in each mound, 1-inch deep and 6 inches apart. Firm soil and keep moist. Avoid over-watering to prevent seeds from rotting. Interplant with borage to attract pollinators, and with radishes to deter insect pests.
Seedlings emerge in 5 to 10 days. When plants first form flowers, thin by snipping all but 2 plants per mound, and side-dress with compost or a low-nitrogen fertilizer, or foliar-feed with liquid kelp. Water deeply twice a week, in the morning. Daily watering is not recommended.
Harvest for peak flavor and texture when squash are 6- to 8-inches long, about 45 days after germination.To combat squash vine borers, interplant with oregano, and reserve several seeds for a second, midsummer sowing.
