Danvers carrot is sweet and stout, great for juice, puree, roasting or simply eating fresh, bite after crunchy bite.

Sow outdoors in full sun or light shade 2 weeks before your average date of last frost. Soil should be loose, well-drained and free of stones. Incorporate a granular, low-nitrogen fertilizer, compost or hardwood ashes into the top three inches of soil before planting.

Sow the tiny seeds sparingly in a 1/4 inch-deep furrow, cover lightly with soil and keep moist. Plants emerge within 10 days. For a nearly continuous harvest, sow every couple of weeks until temperatures reach 75°F. For late Summer and Fall crops, resume seeding when temperatures drop to 65°F.

When 2 inches high, thin seedlings to 3 inches apart and mulch to keep soil cool and moist. Carrots do best with 1 inch of water a week. When plants are 4 inches tall, side-dress with an organic granular fertilizer such as 2-2-2 every couple of weeks. To prevent “green shoulders” mulch close to the stems to block sunlight.

Danvers carrots mature in 70 days, or when they are 6 inches long and 1-1/2 inches wide.
