Buttercrunch lettuce is a delicious cool-weather crop and one of the easiest to grow. Prepare a seedbed by incorporating well-aged compost and a balanced, granular fertilizer into the top 6 inches soil.
Start seeds outdoors 3 to 5 weeks before your average last frost date, in full sun or partial shade. Sow seed 1/16-inch deep and 2 inches apart in rows 1 foot apart. Cover very lightly with soil and keep moist. Plants emerge in 5 to 10 days and should withstand light frost. Sow weekly until late spring, and again in late summer for a nearly continuous harvest.
When plants are 3 inches tall, thin to 10 inches apart. Mulch to keep soil cool and moist. Lettuce requires 1 inch of water weekly. Apply an organic fertilizer high in nitrogen once or twice during the growing season.
Buttercrunch lettuce requires 55 to 60 days to form a small, loose head, but outside leaves can be harvested in 30 days.
