Want crisp, delicious radishes? Plant Cherry Belles while the soil is cool, harvest while they’re no bigger than an inch across, and eat right away. Radish roots and leaves are a low-calorie source of antioxidants and vitamin C. In the garden, radish leaves attract pollinators and will deter several insect pests.
Sow outdoors in moist, fertile soil and full sun, starting 5 weeks before your last frost, or when soil temperature is near 45°F. Clear stones from the top 3 inches of soil and add compost and hardwood ash as needed. Avoid adding nitrogen. Radishes are best eaten fresh, so plant a couple of square feet or short rows each week until the soil warms to 65°F, sowing seeds 1/2 inch deep and 1 to 2 inches apart.
Plants emerge in 4 to 12 days. When tops are 1 inch high thin plants 2 to 4 inches apart in all directions or in rows that are 8 inches apart. Mulch to keep soil cool. In the absence of rain, give radishes an inch of water a week.
Harvest frequently, starting at 22 days after germination, and before 30 days when flavor and texture may start to decline.
