Avg seeds/pkt 50

When you’re short on garden space, look up. That’s where Purple Podded pole beans will thrive as long as conditions are right: a secure support system, full sun, warm weather, and frequent harvests. Sounds complicated but really, pole beans are one of the easiest vegetables to grow and their leafy vines with pink blossoms make an attractive backdrop.

Sow seeds at the base of a trellis, fence, or teepee made of 6-foot poles. Plant 1 inch deep and 2 to 4 inches apart in well-drained, loose-textured soil, two weeks after your average last frost date, or when soil temperatures are 65°F or warmer. Keep evenly moist. Plants emerge within 10 days. When plants are 2 inches tall, thin to 4 to 6 inches apart.

Beans need an inch of water each week when blossoming and developing pods, but wet leaves are susceptible to disease. In the absence of rain, water deeply in the morning and allow plants to dry before handling.

After 70 days, or when pods reach 7 inches in length, harvest thoroughly every few days to keep vines producing through the end of summer. Pods have a good, rich flavor; try them fresh or steamed and don’t be surprised when they change from violet to green as they cook.
